Mother’s Day is the second Sunday of May and is coming up quickly! At a loss on what to get your mother and tired of giving her the same thing every year?
If you have a mother like mine who tells you every year she wants nothing for the house or items that don’t feel they’re for her and mainly for the family then you’ve come to the right post!
I’ve always liked to get creative on the gift-giving aspect so here are some gift ideas for every type of mom. Remember just get creative with it!
1. Fancy Mother: Designer handbags and luxury goods are always a welcomed item with this kind of mom. And if that is her forte then by all means stay on that path. But if you want to think outside of the box consider going one step further and taking her to make her own custom scent. There are two ways this can be done; by either making it online or taking her to a custom store that will take her through the whole experience.
Opus Oils resides in Hollywood, CA, and has an adorable little storefront that you can make an appointment with them if you’re looking for a more hands-on experience.
Sarah Horowitz located in Westlake Village, Ca offers a questionnaire for online customer scents as well as scheduling appointments two weeks in advance.
OlFactory NYC is located on the east coast and has a few shops in Nolita, West Village, and Williamsburg. They also have online services as well as in-shop appointments.
2. Old-Fashioned Mother: For the mom who is a little on the vintage and old-fashioned side. I love the idea of finding a special vintage tea set or finding a class to take where she can paint her own tea set. Even finding one-of-a-kind classic novels like “Little Women” or “Pride and Prejudice.” Things that feel vintage and last forever. Maybe a day spent perusing vintage shops and buying her the first piece of furniture or clothing that lights her up. As kids, our parents always took an interest in what we loved as kids. As an adult, I think it’s time we pay a little of that back and spend some time doing what interests them.
3. Spa-Loving Mother: Now I truly feel that every mother should be pampered with a spa day. I mean, after all, they are the wonder women of our lives! Consider getting her a gift certificate for a massage, facial, or other spa treatment at a beautiful resort or storefront. You can even hire a masseuse to come to her home and set the mood in her bedroom yourself. If she’s not a total spa day person and would much rather treat herself find a set of high-quality bath salts, a luxurious bathrobe, some beautiful scented candles, spa slippers, and a cooling mask and wrap it a nice little basket to gift her. Moms deserve all the pampering too!
4. Wine-Loving Mother: For mothers who love to host or enjoy a nice glass of wine after a long day. Buying her a bottle of wine is always a welcomed gift. But let’s not just stop at the bottle of wine. If she doesn’t have a fancy bottle opener, bottle topper and a beautiful decanter put together a wine crate of your own and pair it with some great cheese (Trader Joes has an easy and great selection (I highly recommend the vanilla blueberry chevre goat cheese) with some meats, jams, and nuts to pair. If you want to make it a day take her to a vineyard with beautiful grounds that she has yet to experience. Or take care of her membership for the month or year!
5. Plant-Loving Mother: My mother is a plant-loving mother. She turns broken sticks into trees. I’m not kidding either. This kind of mother, they’re always in need of new dirt for indoor and outdoor plants, watering cans, new gardening gloves, and new shears. If your mother is like my mother she would rather you buy her a plant she can water and love on than flowers that will die. Head on over to Green Acres and get creative with it! They’ll love the time they get to spend in the garden and bonus points if you get in there with her and help her out.
6. Mother Who Has Everything/Hard-to-Shop-For: This is where I shine because I am the queen of giving experiences over gifts. And usually for the mothers (or really anyone in general) who can buy themselves what they want researching and finding experiences that speak to their soul is quite possibly the best gift ever. Not only does it light you up to give it but it lights them up because you took the time to understand their interests and research ways to make it a hands-on experience. Experiences can range from a cooking class to a hot air balloon ride, to making their own perfume, and if they’re adventurous a day white water rafting on the river. Putting together an experience has no limits! Especially nowadays!
Alternatively, you could get her a personalized gift, like a custom photo book, custom to go coffee mug for coffee lovers, a blanket with her favorite dog’s photo on it (dig deep through her old albums), or a piece of artwork made just for her.
At the end of the day, all moms really want to feel is loved, valued, and appreciated. It is truly not about the gift you splurge on to give her but the thoughtfulness behind what you’re giving her. Sometimes a mom doesn’t need anything monetarily spent on them but they need a day off (I’d even go as far to say a weekend off) from being a mom, from tending to responsibilities, from worrying about what’s for dinner, and just not being able to be a person who gets to think of herself for once. And let’s be real even if they got to do that they would still be thinking of everyone else in their families because that’s just how loving mothers truly are.
Happy Mother’s Day to all the amazing Wonder Women we call mothers out there!
